how to install .tar.gz rpm file
 
Hello Linux Gurus,

I have installed CentOS 5.5 and I downloaded squid and dansguardian in tar.gz format. how do I install it? I'm only familiar in rpm file.


please help....

tar.gz is a compressed archive format and can contain just about anything.

First, extract the archive using "tar -xzvf filename", and see what's inside.

But, FIRST, are these apps available using your package manager?--Always try there first.

ok. I've aleardy seen a lot of files after your suggested tar command, what would be next for the installation?

Look for a README file with instructions. Also, look for something like an installer script. If there is a MAKEFILE, then you need to compile the SW using the "make" command. Tell us what files you have and we can give more help.

Did you check with the package manager as I suggested earlier?

yum search ?????
it is in RF repo!

Ive tried this also it only gives me w/ this error:

error: Failed dependencies:

I do not think so seeing as that is a rh9 rpm AND NOT A RHEL 5.5 rpm
