How to install S-Math onto Zorin 8

hi Folks, Here's a link to SMath - it appears there's a linux version. How do I go about installing it? I have no idea how to do this on Zorin and on my previous Ubuntu I never figured it out. Any help appreciated.

The download link is at the page below. You can extract the tar.gz in a file manager by right-clicking and selecting extract here. You will then see a directory of the same name which should have instructions, probably a REAME file.l

http://smath.info/?file=739150

You can also extract it from a terminal. Explanation and sample commands at the site below:

I've downloaded it and extracted it, but none of the files appear to be anything remotely like a readme or instruction. Will research download site.

I downloaded and extracted it. Note that the page says you need to install Mono (it says "last version of mono distributive"). Trying to start it by running the exe in terminal will tell you the files you need like so:

Code:
john@john-hp:~/Downloads/SMathStudioDesktop.0_97_5154.Mono$ ./SMathStudio_Desktop.exe
The assembly mscorlib.dll was not found or could not be loaded.
It should have been installed in the `/usr/lib/mono/2.0/mscorlib.dll' directory.
Then I googled and found this: On stackoverflow. I ran this:
Code:
sudo apt-get install mono-complete
and then when all done, run in terminal from the folder where SMath is extracted:
Code:
./smathstudio_desktop_mono
and it will pop right up.

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 (which coincides with the Zorin 9 coming out) but Zorin 8 (Ubuntu 12.04) should work similarly I think.

Zorin 9 was just released; however, Zorin 8 is based off of Ubuntu 13.10, which was the short term support ending this month.

When I installed "mono" I saw a lot of problems come up on the terminal screen..........

However, the .exe runs fine seemingly when I ran it from terminal like you suggested. I'll have to test further to see if it is functioning correctly. Do these problem declarations as shown above look serious?

Is it possible (like windows) when you have a .exe you can put a "shortcut" with an icon that will save you have to go into the terminal and drill down to the folder to run the application?

hi Gents, Can somebody tell me what this means please. SMath was working 6 months ago but now there seems to be a problem. Is it because I'm still on Zorin 8?

Why are you still using Zorin 8 whose support ended 6 months ago?

I have other things in my life beside updating my computer. I have a good job that means I travel a lot and I like to come home and use my computer as distinct from becoming it's slave. It would suit me fine if the whole computer industry could stop updating and just get it working properly and leave it alone for 5 years. I have burned Z9 to disc though and sometime in the next 12 months I'll probably install it. Thanks for commenting though.

My point was not to criticize you. I have noticed that sometimes when people do "unusual" things, they may have a unique reason for it, and understanding that can be helpful in finding a solution for them.

Strangely enough, Ubuntu (which Zorin is based on) does offer a 5 year support version you talk about, unfortunately you got the 9 month version. I'm with you on not being a slave to the computer! But, hey security is a big deal these days, so you really need to get that zorin 9 installed soon! Sorry for any misunderstanding and good luck.
