Before you go too far, have you tried using the Ubuntu specific method?

Doing it this way should simplify things greatly.

that woks a lot better, now all i have to do is do that again out of this "X" server

i already looked at that, and it does not appear to be applicable to Ubuntu 11.X

init 1
Then install the driver and reboot

Ok, it seems there is now a ppa for new nvidia drivers for ubuntu 11.04. Have a look at:
