How to install Mplayer, Xfree86, and whatever else is needed to make them run

I have been trying to install Mplayer but the problem is the Manuel keeps saying I need this and that to run this. So I go to download those files and then those files say I need these to run them, and so on. It is becoming a major headache because I have been trying to just install MPlayer and in the process I am installing over 40 different programs. Please can anyone just tell me how to just make MPlayer and Xfree86 work. I now use Mandrake Linux 10.0.

Thank you;

mplayer is on the Mandrake 10 install CD's.
Should be dead easy to install: start menu -> system -> configure your computer -> root password -> Mandrake control center -> software management -> install.

But now it's installed, but when I try playing a movie the video is very laggy. What do I do to make it run smoother?
