And I registered here just to get help with this modem

Thanks for the help Dushaw (I'm Kiwi, a Wellingtonian to be specific) and everyone else's, I'll try your suggestions. I'd given up on this modem and decided to take it back to the shop when they finally told me to try changing some of my BIOS settings to..

Onboard Serial Port 1: 2F8/IRQ3
Onboard Serial Port 2: 3F8/IRQ4

This change fixed my problems in Linux but did nothing for Windows, spose you Linux nuts would say "so what's the problem?" but I'll try Dushaw's fixes and see what happens. Hope I don't get in trouble on this site for talking about Windows?!

Now if only I could get Mozilla Firebird to install properly on Linux - will Linux ever work

Well I tried Dushaw's initialisation string* and I can dial up under Windows

Not sure if it's slower/faster than my software modem, but it seems to be a pretty similar speed. Still got to get Firefox working before I can use Linux for my day to day internet browsing though. Time to do some research.

*It was an initialisation string wasn't it?
