How to install linux on an external hard drive?

I know that there is such question answered already but checking at the date I saw that it was posted on 2007 so it is kind of outdated.
Please suggest me a linux distribution that can be run from an external hard drive.
Thank you.

On a normal USB conencted hard drive, there shouldn't be anything stopping any fully featured current doing this.
