how to install latest LILO
 

hi everybody,
my HD is 40GB with win xp installed in the first primary partition of 10GB
FreeDOS is installed in the 2nd primary partition (2GB) and all my data is in 3 logical drives in the extended partition (24GB)
using rannish partition manager i made a primary linux partition in the free space, then from within freedos, i installed mulinux into this partition.
i tried to installed LILO as boot loader to a floppy disk
but there was a message saying my HD has more than 1024 cylinders and LILO cannot be installed.
so currently i am using loadlin to start mulinux
i.e. i boot freedos and then start mulinux with loadlin
i have read that the newer versions of LILO do not have the 1024 cylinder limitation, and have downloaded "lilo-22.7.3.src.tar.gz"
how can i use install this version of LILO to a device of my choice (floppy - dev/fd0 or root of linux partition dev/hda3)
please explain step by step since i am a newbie and am just getting familiar with linux

Lilo is Linux boot loader and must be installed inside a Linux. I am not familiar with Mulinux that can be installed inside a version of Dos. It is likely such old version of limited implementation of Linux will not be able to unpack Lilo and offer all the kernel support for it.

My advice to you is to install a newer version of stand alone Linux and use its boot loader (of either Lilo or Grub) to boot all the systems. All the distros can be accommodated inside a 10Gb partition plus a swap partition about 0.5 to 1Gb.

You can also consider Grub4dos which is an implementation of Grub inside a Dos. It is downloadable from Grub4Dos web site.

Grub can be installed without a Linux and its source files are obtainable from any LInux Live CD that supports Grub. Most Live CD can. Thus you can install Grub in a Fat partition.

The easiest route is to install a standalone LInux and other methods do demand a bit of Linux knowledge.

i managed to install LILO that came with mulinux to the bootsector of the linux parttion by manually editing lilo.conf
i am unable to download a real linux because i only have a dial-up connection

It has to be a pretty old Lilo that still has a problem with 1024 cylinders. I entered Linux about two years ago and have never enounter such problem. I use 300Gb for my Linux and under half of them use Lilo
