How to install Internet Explorer in Mandrake
 

What do I do once I have downloaded ie6.tgz? Is there a step by step procedure to get it up and running. Some of my support programs(Call Wave,Propel Accelerator) need Internet Explorer to work.

Why the hell would you want IE in Linux? Most of us go to LInux to get away from the crap that M$ puts out.

Why the nasty responce? If you read my post I said I need IE to run a couple of programs I like and need for my computer. Please get back to the original question. Politics don't help me at all.

I imagine if you un-tar the file there's a readme or install directions in the file

Never heard of ie6 for linux.
1. Untar files by executing console command in same folder that file is located
tar -zxvf ie6.tgz
2. Change to the newly created directory and look for some readme file that explains how to compile or install.

No offence intended.. but.. why did you post that? I don't think it helped anyone. And.. I'm sure all people which are new to Linux appreciate things like that. (it's called a zealot, and it's worse then an opponent)

As for the question at hand.
I don't know where you got that tar.gz from, but delete it now. MS does not release versions of ie for Linux. It's some kind of joke or worse.
Get IE6 SP1 from the MS website (or some CD)
Install the newest wine (www.winehq.org) and use the following guide to install it.

And pick your version of IE.
This to my knowledge is the only way to run IE in Linux. There most definitely is not a tar.gz which woud contain a linux version of IE.
What wine does it lets you run certain windows programs (and games ;)) on Linux.

Dude - teval's answer is right on. I don't know where you got this "ie6.tgz" file, but the only legitimate source for IE would be Microsoft, and they definitely don't build a version for Linux. I'd say installing this file would be perilous in the extreme.

On a more positive note, you can get Windows apps to work under Linux if you install wine, but note that wine is imperfect, and not all apps work. Teval's links though are the ones that will get you started.

Seriously though, destroy that "ie6.tgz" file. It definitely is NOT legitimate. -- J.W.

My question wasn't an attack on you, it was more of me expressing shock. With all the holes in IE and it being a sub standard browser to begin with, I wondered why you would want to run it at all.

No problem. I have a program called Call Wave which is a cheap way to know I am getting a phone call and who it is at the same time. It requires IE to run. I downloaded Wine and it ran it ok but then came up with the message that IE is required. Same with Propel Accelerator. I typed "how to get IE to run of Mandrake" and it sent me to a website with that ie6.tgz file. I have since deleted it as you all suggested.

i use crossover office to run IE in linux, this is the only way i know of getting into msn chat rooms, which in my opinion are the best computer chatrroms. dunno if i can post links in here but if you search google for "crossover office" it is the first thing that comes up. hope this helps you. you can also install other windows based programs inside it, but i personally havent tried any others. it is only a 30 day trial but its definatly worth a look

Have you looked around to see if there is a similar program available natively for Linux? I would highly recommend against emulation if at all possible (because its imperfect and I don't know how well wine would work with your modem in the first place). So try and google for alternatives. Also for Samson, don't the messengers that are able to connect to MSN (Gaim and Kopete come to mind) have to ability to connect to MSN chatrooms? I don't use MSN, but I figured they would.
