how to install debian GUI
 

I have recently installed debian in my system. I have somwhow installed first DVD and I can getinto the prompt and login..I dunno how to install GUI. I hace a second DVD how do i install that?

pls help me.

This is not a detailed primer, but a basic rundown of the steps you'll need to go through.

First of all make sure you have Apt configured correctly. See here for documentation: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/ap...basico.en.html
You can either get packages off of the cd, or better, straight from the net if your connection is fast enough.

Next install the X-window system. "apt-get install x-window-system" will install just about everything you need. Make sure you know your monitor's capabilities and the type of mouse and keyboard you use, since you'll need to configure them.

Finally, choose and install a window manager or desktop environment. If you're a beginner, Gnome or KDE are good choices, but there are quite a few others that are lighter if you want them. Then just reboot and you should get a graphical login. If it doesn't come up automatically, log in at the text prompt, then type "startx" to do the same thing.

Don't be afraid to ask if you have any trouble.

I haven't use it for internet, For learning purpose. So can I do it from CD?

You should be able to. Most of the basic packages are included on the first cd, with other cd's holding less common packages in descending order. All you have to do is configure apt to use them. Read the documentation I gave you.

If and when you can get an internet connection however, Apt makes installation and updating even more powerful. Then there's no need to keep cd's around; it will automatically fetch any packages you need from the mirrors you tell it to.
