how to install cinnamon on partitioned win 7 pc

Greetings, I am asking for any suggestions on how to install cinnamon or mate 17 on my pc with windows 7.

I partitioned the hdd and labeled it "I" drive, It is a logical drive. with 221gb ntfs

Suggestions are helpful as I don't want to redo the whole pc if I screw up.

I just did this last night for my local makerspace. It was embarrassingly easy.

0. Back. Up. Your. Data.

1. No seriously, backup your drive as is. If this goes south, you will be sorry.

2. Boot into Linux Mint.

3. Start the install. You will be asked at one point if you want to install alongside of Windows. Click `Continue`

4. Decide how much hard drive space you want for each OS. It's a click-and-drag interface.

5. Click continue to confirm. This part can take up to 30 minutes, depending on the size of your drive and how much data needs to be shifted around.

6. Continue the install by following the prompts.

Reboot, and you have a boot menu; choose to boot into Mint, and never look back (or, if you must, boot to Win7 as needed).

Cheers.

You mean Back up the drive as it is now? I recently had to redo and have nothing saved on it. All my data is on external drive and I have win recovery disks so I should be fine.

I will try tomorrow and return with results

Finally back......
Thank you for your help in installing Linux 17, it worked great, now the problem...

I tried it with cinnamon and I got the "vertical hold" crash screen before I could even try to install it so I tried mate. No problem, installed without a hitch worked great, downloading wine and half way through again, "vertical hold" crash screen. Now I downloaded cinnamon and mate from 2 different mirrors originally, then from torrent, all from Linux site. broken packages, vertical crash screen every time. This time I got actual disks. cinnamon worked on laptop and mate on desktop...until now. Now I do have a stupidly slow internet (cost of living urban)or my machines do not like Linux, OR I am doing something wrong. I'm guessing 1 or 3.

Any further help would be great, I like Linux but cannot get it to smooth operation. If it is an update issue I cannot get it to update before the vertical crash screen.

Would it be just as good to run from a high speed usb?

What on earth is a "vertical hold crash screen"? Could you take a screenshot? I don't use Mint very often, but I've never seen anything like that. Is it possible there's a hardware problem (maybe overheating)?

newmintuser 11-06-2014 12:05 AM

No, not overheating. Thats all i could think of to call it. The whole screen goes into diagonal (it seems) digital lines at a right angle and i cannot get it to revert. Think old tv's and lightning bolt type lines going from bottom left to top right.

Did you do a MD5 sum check on the download?

yancek 11-06-2014 07:25 AM

Try adding "nomodeset" to the linux line on boot. Probably your graphics drivers. Take a look In System settings or Control Center for an option to install additional drivers. Not sure where the option is with Cinnamon.

Many, many years ago televisions (CRT variety) came equipped with a "vertical hold" control...

newmintuser 11-06-2014 09:39 PM

OK, i will check drivers....
How do i check MD5 sum, I got the os already on the disk, do I still need to do that ?

No.

To do a md5 check on a file, run
Code:

md5sum filename

the os is working great but after 10 to 20 minutes and every time I try to play a video the system freezes or crashes as explained earlier. Can a grafix card cause this??,
