How to install a wireless USB adapter on Ubuntu
 

Hi,

I've installed Ubuntu on my computer some seven years ago and never had any problems, but I'm no expert. Recently I've moved houses and now my router's too far away from my desktop, so I've bought a wireless usb adapter (from eminent) to connect my computer to the internet.

However, I cannot seem to install the driver or anything. The device came with an installation cd, but I can't even properly execute the wizard.exe as I've forgotten how to.

Can someone help me?

need make and model number of wireless usb adaptor. What is the output of with adaptor plug in?

Don't throw that cd away just yet. It tends to only have windows programs. They however may have some chance of being used if all else fails.

7 years ago?? We may need to consider an update. If your system is that old the newer usb nic's may not be in the system.

Recent Linux distributions - especially if using network manager - will need no help at all in using most wireless usb adaptors. last year I wanted to know the chipset on the adaptor that came with my TV, so I plugged it in to my machine but before I finished typing lsusb it had been recognised and connected.

My sister bought a couple of usb wifi sticks on ebay to use with a couple of ancient laptops running Manjaro. Plugged them in and used them.

The howtogeek site helped me a lot. At the time my pc had no internet, because my wifi card was not recognised. So I had to download the driver with my phone and then transfer the download to my PC.
I've also ran into problems in the past that I just could not corrected with out being connected to the internet. If you do not have experience with downloading and transferring and the installing software on Ubuntu, I think your best bet would be to temporarily set up your PC near your router and plug in the Ethernet until you get the wireless to work. I say this because if you need some program from the Ubuntu store without the internet how are you going to get and install it?
Some wireless cards are not Linux friendly. I went through this with a linksys card (http://community.linksys.com/t5/Soci...le/td-p/498210), and a ranklink card. Research hardware carefully before purchasing them will save you a lot of time in the future. A lot of products are for Windows and Apple only in mind. I'm not sure why companies restrict themselves to these communities, but they do with their products and software. Their loss not ours.
Please let us know what eminent model you have as well, this will help in other web searches about your hardware.
