Yes, you can use a pendrive for that. A common program to make an USB-stick bootable and copy a Linux install-disc/live-CD to it is unetbootin. After you have done this you simply can boot from the USB-device and either use it as live-system or install from it to the harddisk.

PXE installs are still common.

The most easy way to setup a pxe is to use knoppix terminal server. From there you can install almost any pxe bootable distro.

One can use the intenet even with a floppy or usb. GPXE and Ipxe can be used to sites like netboot.me and boot.kernel.org and I think fedora had a site.

You can borrow a usb cd drive from some friend.

You may be able to use boot floppies still to get to most major distro's ftp sites.

If you have wubi you may be able to run it from a mounted virtual cd in windows.

Might be able to use grub4dos to boot to a cd image.

Pendrive and things like compact flash and sd cards may work on some models.

There are things like virtual machines if you have enough ram.

See colinux to run linux at the same time.

Visit pendrivelinux website for they have plenty usefull info, tips and guides about this topic. If you don't want use USB you can also attach external CD|DVD drive to laptop.
