how to insert special characters

hello,
i would like to know if there is a way to insert special characters like those with accents or greek letters without using the character map. (i dont want to have to stop my typing and go clicking for the letter)
for example, in windows, you could use Alt+Decimal_Code for a character.
or even Ctrl+' and then the letter you want accented.
is there a similar thing for linux?
thank you

For accents, there is the "compose" key. In Mandrake, I think it is mapped to the right "flying-window" key (or maybe the "windows-menu" key).
