How to improve performance on laptop Toshiba.

Hi!

My laptop runs windows and redhat 9. My Ram is 96 MB and that seems not enough as everything is working slow. Is there a way to boost performance?

If I upgrade to 157 MB which is the maximum possible, will I have any noticable results? Is that worth? Will I have to reinstall to have a bigger swap partition?

Thanks.

Michel

yes, ram upgrade will have a noticeable effect. but again, depends on what you are trying to run on the machine.
how big is your swap partition? with such low RAMs, a swap size of double the RAM is suggested by many.

also, make some tweaks/modifications on the kernel and bootup routines. maybe you would like to try compiling your own kernel. it will definitely make it faster.

also, you must have installed with almost all packages? if yes, make sure none of them are loaded at startup (the ones you dont want). you must be using gnome/kde? they wil both make a 96mb run slow. look up some other desktop environments (blackbox, enlightenment, xfce, icewm). i mmyself use xfce4. its small, looks like the other two, and its FAST and LIGHT.

Thank you,

How can I identify programs running at startup and disable them?
Where can I find the xfce4 you are talking about?

xfce - xfce.org.
maybe you can install it using apt, if they have it for redhat (xfce, that is - apt is already there).

programs at startup are located in different places for diff distro's. i dont remember where redhats would be. i suggest redhats online manuals/doc. thats what helped me a lot when i started out. you also know of "tldp.org", i assume, for all the howtos/guides.

Thank you.

It is programs like Open Office Org that take a long time to load. If I use xfce4 as my desktop, is there a chance to see OOO be faster?

Michel:)
