how to get write access

Installed a LAMP server on Ubuntu 11.04. Works perfectly. Am using Quanta Plus to create and edit .php files.

When I try to save a .php file from Quanta Plus to the folder /var/www/, a popup tells me to "Check that you have write access to this file or that enough disk space is available."

There is plenty of disk space available. So I need to know how to get write access.

Thanks for any assistance.
