How to get rid of casper/vmlinuz and back to Win XP Pro SP3 alone

I have all my PCs dual boot Win XP Pro SP3, Ubuntu 12.04.

On the one PC still using a HDD, I get this casper/vmlinuz file not found error. Even reinstalling Ubuntu did not get rid of error. Totally removing Ubuntu and deleting the Ubuntu parition did not work. How do I get back to just the Win XP Pro SP3?

Download Recovery Console, burn to disk & fix master boot record.

casper is a directory in the root of the filesystem on a Live CD which contains the kernel (vmlinuz) file and will not be on an actual system installed to a hard drive.

Is this a wubi install of Ubuntu?
Do you boot with Ubuntu Grub? xp bootloader?
Do you get this when selecting Ubuntu from the boot menu?
A little short on detail.

Thank you to all for your suggestions. Orignal configuration did not use wubu. Just the grub (?) menu that includes boot options. After whatever happened to the HDD, boot only gave the casper/vmlimuz error. I had tried the boot-repair CD, but it would not fix the problem (at least the way I was running it). I wound up deleting the Ubunti partition and using the boot-repair program to put a new MBR on the XP partition. Problem solved.
