How to get my Canon MP 495 working with Ubuntu
 

I am not very computer saavy but successfully downloaded Adobe Flash Player using the command lines. Scared me to death. Now I need to get my printer working as well. It's a Canon MP 495. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Also I am running a duel boot with XP. I'm running Ubuntu 13.10.

There is a set of drivers from Canon for the MP495.

When you download and unzip the drivers, you should find a guide to install them. If your linux is 64-bit, look to see if there are 64-bit installation files. If not, you will have to force the installation by editing the 32-bit installation files. The Internet will tell you more.

Thank you. I clicked on the link and got lost. I have no idea how to do that or which ones I'm supposed to download. Is there an easier way?

You click on Software, then choose linux as your OS and click Select, and a list of software will will appear. Click on the drivers files. Do this for first the printer and then the scanner driver files. A web page will appear for each.

In both cases, after you agree to the conditions of license, you can download a .tar files that has a.deb installation file, the file type for those linux distributions that derive from Debian. Each .tar(compressed) file can be extracted to a folder. Open the folder and click on the file containing the installation guide. Proceed from there.

This is a command line installation. It is easy, but you should consult the Internet for help with using and understanding the command line. During the installation, you may need to install further linux packages required as dependencies, that is needed packages that are not already present but should be available from the repositories that you should have enabled when you installed linux.

This exercise can be considered as a good way to become frustrated or a good way to learn some linux; it is likely both.
