How to format a HD

I just added a new hard disk to my system. What commands do I use to format and partition it?

cat /proc/partitions

find which hd it is

cfdisk (somewhat menubased) or fdisk (completely command line)

cfdisk /dev/hd? (?=what ever the drive is)
or
fdisk /dev/hd?

mkfs -t ext2 /dev/hd?
or
mkfs -t ext3 /dev/hd?
