how to first connect to internet to backtrack
 

i have installed backtrack and i use a usb internet connection, how will install rpm or deb packages????
i have tried a lot to install the packages with ivh and uvh, etc but none helped, can anyone help me in this with the correct command so i can connect to internet.

to help we'll need more information. Specifically, what is "a usb internet connection"?
Perhaps the output of the command lsusb might help identify what this device actually is.

If your using the Gnome version.

Under the applications menu,
Then under Internet,
You will find an application called "WICD Network manager"

Thats where I started.

usb internet means, i have usb modem and i m not able to connect the usb modem in backtrack, when i insert the usb, in the computer section it just shows an usb icon, when i double click it, it enters the usb folder and it has the following files in it :-
Autorun.ico, Autorun.inf, CrossPlatformUI-V2.1.2-SSTL.dmg, CrossPlatformUI-V2.1.2-SSTL-i386-ubuntu.deb, CrossPlatformUI-V2.1.2-SSTL-i586-fedora.rpm, CrossPlatformUI-V2.1.2-SSTL-i586-openSUSE.rpm, Setup.exe.
I also tried the WICD Manager, but it is for the wireless connection.

I doubt you have any use for backtrack. If you can't get this working the other tools in backtrack will not be any use. Consider one of the types that this modem is claiming to support.

As you can see the usb modem seems to have some storage area that also has files for users. Deb files for for Debian based distro's. Rpm is for Red hat distro's and you have an OpenSuse package. Crossplatform tends to be QT framework a cross platform sort of app in the lines of what Java once promised. A usb device can have storage and another use also.

It would help if you stated what this usb was. Is it a 4G modem?
