How to find out an error number

Hi, I've got a general question: where can I find out the meaning of error numbers for different programs.

For instance, I'm trying to run a remote application using my Xserver and I get the following error

_X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 146

How can I find out what the problem is?

Thanks
