How to find an IP from a local network share

Hi there,

I am trying to figure out what is the command to use so that I can find the IP of a samba share on my local network at home. On my Mac when I go into the network icon, my hp laptop is seen there and i can connect to it graphically. Yet what is the command that I can use from the apple terminal to find out what the samba share translates to? my samba share name is hp-laptop. I dont have a DNS its just an airport base station that is doing the DNS.

can I use netstat or lookup or traceroute??

thanks

nmap is a host/port scanner that can find hosts on your network.

What you need is a network scanning tool. Pick one you like from here -
