How to extract .shn files?
How do I extract .shn files?
Thank you, R- |
You have to find/install the shorten plugin/application for your distro. This converts the files to .wav
|
there's no GUI for this?
There's no GUI to do this? I don't have the knowledge to understand the parameters to use shntool.
Another frustrating day. I am NOT a programmer. How can I extract shn files? Frustrated. I installed shntool, but I have no idea what the instructions are telling me about how to use it. Frustrated. |
Does something like this help? You haven't really said what you are trying to do or how you are/have trying/tried to do it.
Edit - forgot the link http://freshmeat.net/projects/xmms-shn/ |
I try to respect all you gurus by making my questions as concise as possible.
I have downloaded some music files. They are in .shn format. From what I've read, it's another file compression method, which is used primarily for music files. I don't know how to play these files. Mplayer can't play them. That's when I learned that they're compressed files that need to be extracted. Like zip. If I can extract these files, maybe mplayer will play them? I installed shntool via synaptic package manager. But, sheesh, I can't understand how to use it. I feel like a retard. But have nowhere else to get help, except here from you. Ubuntu Feisty. Thank you. |
Hi MooseMagnet If you'll look above at the previous post you'll find your answer. Once you get the pluggin installed you should be able to just play the *.shn files, no need to extract anything. They are simply sound/audio files with a different compression scheme. It's been my experience that the majority of these are live recordings of one sort or another. Hope that clears things up a bit for you.
Good luck. ;-) |
Edited...reason is below
|
Having a tough time with this one for some reason.
I have downloaded this folder onto my desktop xmms-shn-2.4.1 But what to install, and how to install it? I was expecting a .tar.gz Not sure how to install this. |
Now I have this file on my desktop
xmms-shn-2.4.1.tar-2 But don't know how to unzip it. I'm only familiar with gunzip filename, and that isn't working. This all started, because I want to be able to grab, capture, audio streams. There doesn't seem to be any way to do that with ubuntu. So, instead, I found some shn files that I can download. But now I can't get the plugin installed. What I really want to do is capture audio streams. Frustrated. |

Here is a good start. I know that's a general search but, with numerous methods and not knowing exactly what you're trying to get, it's the best I can offer. Good luck. ;-) |
Here is a good explanation of installing things the proper way with Ubuntu and how to install from source if you can't get the package you need or want from the usual suspects.
It's a good idea to use the tools that your distro provides to install software, however, there are times you need something that those tools can't provide. It seems to have all the proper warnings but, be sure to read it all before proceeding. Good luck. ;-) |
