How to escape KDE FReeze

I am running RH7.1, and I am in the grunt stage of Linux -- taking my knocks trying to learn this darn thing!

I have locked up my display several times. I have tried ctrl+backspace and ctrl+alt+backspace and nothing happens, i thought this would kill xserver? What do you do when the Xserver crashes?

There are various things you can do.
First of all, try getting to a console. You do that by pressing ctrl+alt+F[1-6] or if you are in a console alt+F[1-6]. After you have logged in you can type 'ps auxc | less' and that should display a whole list of things, the second and the last column is what you want, when you have found an application you want to kill you press 'q' and that should get you out of 'less' the pager.
after which you should be able to issue the command 'kill [second column]'
The second column is the pid (Process IDentification number) of your application.

Hope that helpes you.

This problem has a two-part solution:

a) What are you doing to lock up X?

b) Stop doing that!

There, problem solved :)

All kidding aside, what are you doing that's locking up X?

And the only thing that I can add to the previous posters (excellent) suggestions, is that you could try telnetting into your box and unsticking it that way. Kind of a PITA though...

Any special hardware that we should be aware of? (i.e. USB keyboard, KVM switch, etc)
