You need to tell us what happens when you try "startx", otherwise it's impossible to help you.

Also, you do know that Slackware 11 is out, right?

You need to configure X before you try startx by running the configuration script. In recent versions of slackware you go to /etc/X11 and run xorgconf as root. In 8.1 the command might be something like xr86config. You will find it described in the slackware book

problem that i have found when i type startx

when i type the command startx the screen becomes black then after 2 seconds the fatal error message appears. the messages is cannot locate server something like that. I have download the slackware from internet using ftp then burn to the cd. so i don't have a user guide or reference book to configure it

You need to configure X. On newer slackware systems you would do this by running xorgconf. I cannot find the old slackbook on the internet to tell you eaxactly what to do but I think you need to run x86config as root.
