How to enter automatically to gnome or gdm?

I'm totally new in Linux, I just installed it and solved some problems I had.
I installed Slackware 9.0 in a Pentium 1 and my problem is that I always enter to console mode, after I enter as root and after that i type startx to enter to Gnome.
How can I automatically enter to gnome?
Thanks for your help

You need to change your /etc/inittab so that your default runlevel is 4 rather than 3. Find the line that says "id:4:initdefault:" and change the 4 to a 3. You'll need to edit the file as root. Also, if you haven't done so already, you should make a regular user account for normal use and shouldn't be using root all the time. One final thing: are you sure Slackware 12.0 wouldn't have installed on that machine (though Slack hasn't come with GNOME for some time now)? 9.0 is quite old now!
