how to enable the interface?

hai pals,

I am chandru here. i am facing a problem in linux os. i.e., i am having windows-xp as the first os and linux as second os as usual. Through windows i can connect to internet but in linux i am not able to get the ip at all. It gives me the error that could not able to load 3c501(laptop) at the booting or when i try to run service network restart.
Now my question is how to enable the interface and assign the ip for my linux? could any body help me out soon?

It sounds like linux is not loading the right module for your network card.
What make/chipset is it? What do you see when you type "ifconfig"
