How to enable syslogd

I am using linux 2.4.20 on mips malta board.
For this i am using nfs.

I am unable to see syslogd /usr/sbin.
How I can enable syslogd support in the kernel image.

Also how to add support of dmesg in the kernel.

mine is in /sbin

depending on your runlevel.....runlevel x will call /etc/init.d/syslogd

I am not sure of your distro but some allow services for certain runlevels to have on or off syslog.
