php4_module is loaded...

Under Windows:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php4 .phtml
Action application/x-httpd-php "/php/php.exe"

And under linux? the same?

I had the same problem. There is a mistake in the /etc/php.ini file.

Find the line that says...

short_open_tag = Off

...and change it to ...

short_open_tag = On

You need to be logged in as root to edit this file.
When you have finished restart the httpd process (or just reboot your machine) and it should work.
