how to enable graphical mode for ubuntu 8.04

Hi
I I've just installed the ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron server on my computer
when it first started I only had the text mode
so i did a
apt-get install kde
this took the computer like 10 minutes, no errors, I rebooted
but I still don't have a grpahical environment
maybe I did't have to onstall kde, and is there another possibility
but I didn' knew what to do
anyone knows how to enable graphical mode (kde or anything else)
i tried the ctrl+alt+f1,F2,...... (they're all text)

greetings

login first
Then

# startx

If that does not work, then boot into recovery mode and fix your graphical settings

Also post your hardware specs.... the graphics card, monitor.

Did the server CD have a graphical interface?

You can also try

#kdm

or

#sudo kdm

I will try your suggestions in just a minute
thanx in advance

hardware specs hdd 8GB IDE (OS)
8GB IDE (files)
8GB IDE (backup)

graph card: ATI don't know the rest (I think radeon, 128)
monitor is an old vga machine
--> will switch to remote desktop when fully installed

I'm afraid the problem is probably that your graphics card is not recognised or supported. Older ATI cards can be a problem. Newer ones will probably work, but Nvidia is usually better with Ubuntu.

If your HD is really just 8GB it sounds like a very old machine. Ubuntu and Kubuntu really need at least 512MB RAM, so part of the problem may be insufficient memory to run a graphical environment.

Before giving up, you could try Xubuntu which is aimed at low-spec machines, or one of the other Linux distributions with low hardware requirements.

I actually got gnome to work right off with a radeon 128 using gnome , dunno about space constraint

sudo apt-get ubuntu-desktop

I had the same problem. I decided to install Kubuntu desktop instead. Saved me a world of trouble.

I have 1024 of ram
and ok 24 GB of HDD isn't so much but it must be enough
the miminum requirements for ubuntu are 4GB HDD but they advise 8 on their website
