How to edit /etc/samba/smb.conf

Everytime i try to edit the config file for samba and save it i keep getting permission errors. Im logged in as a local user..

You have to log in as root... or you can use the su command:
: su
Password: <your-root-password>

whats the username for root?

Is it just root? then the password?

yup but you should just be able to type 'su' and then it will prompt you for the root password.
