how to edit a *.jar file?

Note: Mandrake 10.1, KDE

My question, I think, is how to open and modify a *.jar file.
I've encountered the known bug in mozilla that prevents exporting the address book. But where my newbness appears is in actually applying the patch . I've tried to use the editors (GEdit, Kate, KEdit) to modify the file, but it will not save because of the character coding (in some cases I can't even open the file: messenger.jar). Emacs might be the answer, but I'm a little lost in editing the file using it.
Your help is appreciated!

messenger.jar is a zip file. Unzip it, edit the file (addressbook.js), then zip it up again.

A .jar file is a java archive file. Which just means it is a *ZIP* file, with possibly a few special files included, e.g., manifest.txt.

Unizp it, make changes, and re-zip it, keeping the ".jar" filename.

Perfect.
Opened it with File Roller, edited the file, then added it back in.
Thanks for the timely help, once again.
