Use a screensaver.

That's not helpful. Where or how do I get a screensaver?

Please review the Welcome to LQ and How To Ask a Question links in my signature.

There is no way to advise you where or how to get a screensaver. You've shared absolutely nothing about your pc.
What flavor of Linux are you running?
What desktop environment?
What does "screensaver for <your OS>" return in your favorite search engine? Or even "how to display an image when pc is idle"
What have you tried to search for?
etc.

That's better. I had an old PC that was under powered for Windows 10 so I thought I'd try out Linux. After reading about Linux versions, I installed Linux Mint. The PC is a Dell Optiplex 990 with AMD processors and 4GB memory. I have only been running Linux a few days and trying out different things. I did a right click on the screen to personalize the display (that's a Windows technique) and did not see any option to select and display an image. I did a Google search for "display an image on Linux Mint." One of the links was to LinuxQuestions.org so I followed it, registered myself and did a search. The only result I got was for screencast, which I did not understand. I posted my question in the newbies area because that is what I am. I have good skills in the Windows world and am trying to see what the Linux environment offers. I can't think of anything else to tell you but I am happy to respond with anything you need to know.

The generic answer would be Applications Menu -> System Settings -> Screensaver -> Advanced -> etc.
But the exact trail depends on which Desktop Environment you have.

Which variant of Linux Mint? Although they can all be tweaked to become like the others they do default to specific Desktop Environment, specifically Cinnamon, MATE, or XFCE. I expect you've used the default.

probably simply right-click on desktop and change background to an image works. But it is not exactly what you specified.

probably this helps: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=200070 (or some similar search)

I see Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon 4.4.8 on System Settings/System Info page. Thanks for the hint about System Settings. I see a Backgrounds icon on System Settings so I will use that for what I want. Maybe I could/should have figured this out on my own.

Sounds like you're trying, that helps you a lot, and people are here to help along the way.

Welcome to LQ by the way.

I'm not at my desktop today so I can't be 100% sure, plus I use Mint Debian edition with the MATE desktop.

For every desktop, there's typically a main menu and in there is typically Settings, Administration, Control Panel, or something close. Those open a folder much like Windows does, and in there are the many system configuration tools.

My experience is that the screen saver is usually it's own app there, and not a part of the display app. But every disto is different how they do things.
