how to disconnect ppp link to isp

Hi
I am on RedHat 8.
When I tried to start the pppd again after killing off the pppd process and modem thread it came up with a "failed script" error.
An admin book recommends using ifdown command to terminate the ppp link. When I issued a "ifdown ppp0" command it responsed with an error message: usage: ifdown <device name>. ppp0 is the interface displayed when I issued a " ifconfig " command. I also tried "ifdown /dev/ppp" with same result. What should be the correct way to terminate the link? thanks
