How to detect usb programatically?

Hello All,

I use Fedora Core release 5 and would like to know how to detect usb programatically? I would like to write a daemon which should read the contents of USB when it is avaiable in the drive? Can I do this based on any event or does the daemon have to keep polling the usb port continuously?

Help will be highly appreciated.
