How to customize certain Gtk widgets?

Hello.
I have my theme set up for many months, but now I tried great mail-notification applet. I would like to see popus of messages which just arrived. The problem is that it shows white text on yellow background. I read something about how to configure some theme details, but I'm not Gtk programmer so I don't know what type of widget it is. Does anybody know about some inspection tool?

What window manager do you use? what mailclient? I understood that you use a mail notification applet and you don't like the colors. Correct me, if i'm wrong. Did you have a look at thunderbird?

Hi.
I'm on Gnome 2.20 with metacity. I fetch all my mail with procmail and currently I'm trying mutt. I also use Evolution (because I cannot set IMAP in mutt so far, and it's good client at all). Many GUI programs has forced me to switch back to theme with "normal" colors (light background, dark text) because they has some own color settings which supposed "normal" colors. I had many dark blue links on dark bacground and so on...

Sorry, I forgot to note that I was having dark theme (dark background, light text). Many GUI programs = Firefox/Liferea/Stardict/mail-notification applet/...
