How to create links in applications for programs

I have installed programs such as matlab and gns into my computer.

However, I need to navigate to the folder and double click the script file before it executes.

Can anyone teach me how I can create a script to the applications menu or Desktop using the drag and drop method as well as the command line method?

I want to learn.

Dont we all... welcome to the Path!

Well, there is a possible way.

Desktop method : create a launcher. In XFCE you'd right-click and select just that. Fill out the blanks, navigate to the application and (if needed) supply some extra parameters. Oh, and a nice icon works miracles...

Console method : create a symlink. Okay, dive into a console and you (should) end up in your home folder. Make your way to a folder. Enter this

ln -s /home/me/mystuff/thatprogram -some_parameter_if_needed
And you're set to quickly nav to a folder and enter the name there.

Path method : cool, this one. It allows you to invoke anything system-wide. Enter this:

to POST-path, and to PRE-path
Difference, in pre-pathing, YOUR entry will me searched first, otherwise, all the rest has to be scanned first, and your entry/folder just waits for last...

Have fun!
