how to create a common path

Hi,
Im a Linux

1) How do I create a common path for all the users?
Do I add the path in the bash_profile? But every user
has a different bash_profile, so it cant be this.

2) How do I search for a pattern in all directories
from the command prompt?
ex: I need to search for this patter
" /usr/local/prog/g4 " .....in the entire hard-drive
But grep can search only for patterns in a file.
So which other utility do I use?

Please help
Thank you.

Hmm.....

1. Edit the file /etc/profile
that'll make the changes to the $PATH global.
2. Use: find / | grep filename
Make sure all the partitions you want to search are mounted.
