Unetbootin works well with Ubuntu. You can use it from Windows or Linux.

use livecreator to make your usb into a bootable device.

For Debian Squeeze, installing on a Supermicro 5015A-EHF-D525 with AMI BIOS, I used cat <whatever>.iso > /dev/sdc on another system (where sdc was the UFD -- be very careful with this!!!) then:
  1. Plugged the UFD into the target system
  2. Booted the target system and entered BIOS setup
  3. Configured the BIOS to boot from USB (the UFD was listed as a hard drive)
  4. Booted the target system which booted from the UFD as if it were booting from a DVD

unetbootin is the easiest for us newbies, you can either let it download the image & install it to usb or selct an already downloade iso image.
you can also do this from a linux environment.

unetbootin is the best.

agree about unetbootin.
