How to convert files?
 

A question regarding this: I have a PS3 on which I have installed Fedora Core 5. One of the problems I have is that the word docs seem to impossible to open on other formats. I remember when using works on one PC and I was able to open those files in word format using some kind of downloadable converter. Does anybody know about a similar program for linux files?

Can you install Open Office on the PS3? If so, that has always opened Word files for me.

If you've used Works to create the files, chances are the extension of the file is .wps or similar. A Microsoft word document has the .doc extension, which Open Office can work with, but not the Works word documents with .wps extension. When creating files in Works, you can choose "Save as" and select the .doc extension. You can also open the file with Works if you still have access to Works and do the same right now so it can be opened with most Word applications, which is probably the best thing to do with all your .wps documents as Works is not even backwards compatible, meaning, you cant open a Works 6 document with Works 7. But the .doc extension can be opened and altered by Open Office, Microsoft Office, Corel Word Perfect, etc.

I'm sorry, I don't think I made myself quite clear on that one. I was just comparing to previous experiences with works, I haven't got that program on my PS3 or anything like that. The word processor in my office pack on the Linux system (on the PS3) is not the same as doc on windows. I know this since I and a person I sent the file to, are unable to open this file in windows. However, when I still had my old PC (with windows) I was able to open wps. documents in the word program because of some sort of converter (I don't recall its name). So my question is: do you know of a similar program for opening linux doc. in windows?

Open Linux Doc in Windows.. well it depends on what APPLICATION you used to create the document.

.wps if I'm not mistaken is a Word Perfect Document, and you would need to install the word perfect converter into MS Office to open those files.


if the document has a .sxw or .odt extension it's an Open Office Writer file, and you can install OpenOffice.org on your windows PC to open the file..

Without knowing what APPLICATION you are using to create the file in the first place, it's darn near impossible to tell you what APPLICATION can open the same file in Windows..

Open office in Linux will allow you to save in the .doc formmat of different versions of Microsoft Office. So basically, you can save it to the .doc format of the version of MS Office you have.

Which means you probably just need the right converter in MS Office to open a different version of MS Office .doc file. I have MS Office XP Pro with Word 2000, I have MS Office 2003, I also have MS Office 2007. Not too long ago I did some data recovery and could not open some .doc files with MS Office 2007, I believe these files were created with MS Office XP Pro, I can open them (properly) with MS Office 2003.

Thanks for the advice about openoffice.org - that was the solution I needed.:)
