What exactly are you trying to do? Configure some Samba shares? Integrate with Active Directory? Configure the RH box as a Netbios server?

Which tutorials have you tried? At what point do they stop being useful?

In what way, though? Do you want to do AD authentication? Replication? netbios services? More? There's a whole lot that Samba does and can do (and that you might want it to do but that other things do).
What tutorials have you tried, and where did they go wrong? These will give some insight into what it is you're after.

How are you checking?
I don't know the redhat syntax for starting services, but I *think* it's approximately
service nmbd start
to start nmbd. Check.

To access smb files shared by a Windows box, you don't need a Samba server configured on the Linux box.

Depending on where this user is. If it's a Windows user, defined on the Windows box, all you need is smbclient.
If it's a user on the Linux box, you need to set up some system of using Linux-defined users in a Windows environment, and this is non-trivial.
