Basic steps:
Quote:

1. Log in as an administrator (e.g. "root")

2. Find the "Control Panel" GUI for your particular Linux distro (e.g. "Yast" for Suse Linux)

3. Enable the network interface (e.g. "eth0" for a NIC, or "wlan0" for wireless)

4. Configure the network interface to "get address automatically" (i.e. to use DHCP to get and configure its IP address)

5. Voila! You're on the network.
Here's a tutorial that has more details (probably far more details than you'll actually need):

Connect in the sense? You just need to ping two systems? Or need to share files/folders?
If sharing is your motto then you need to configure samba on linux. If not then configuring network is what you need to do.
And if you need more info you need to give more info about what is your need and what have you done, what is the distro that you are using.

Make sure file sharing is enabled in XP.
