How to configure your Linux after boot?
 

HI

Does anyone know what file I should be configuring in to have my Linux setup the way I want after boot.

I mean eg I would like to have 2 Konsole windows open - so what file should I be looking into?

Conveniantly enough in Mandrake, when I leave my programs up and then log out, and log back in later, they are started along with my desktop. i've not changed any settings for this. KDE does this, and Gnome also restores previously started programs (provided you leave them running when you log out or shut down)

I believe you left out one thing thou you must make sure to check the box when you logout that says save current setup.

Correct! keen eye. I did forget that little checkbox :) it's easy to overlook when you're so used to it I guess.

Does not answer my question - how to do this at the root level - what file looks after this.

Which windowmanager are you using, and which user are you configuring this for (I assume globally?)

What exactly are you trying to configure?

I am looking for the file that Linux looks at when it first boots - these are some of the things I like to do

Open a console minimized
at the console, print the date and time when opened (minimized)
Get KMail to open minimized

I know I can do this and tick that little box to save settings for next time I login - but where exactly is this file located?

Your Window Manager or desktop environment is responsible for opening windows up when you start it, not Linux itself. XWindows stores startup commands in your .xinitrc file (it uses the global xinitrc if you don't have one). Usually, though, this file just starts up your window manager of choice, so we need to know what you're using, as Xolo said.

I am using KDE (kdm) as my windows manager.
