first, SUSE Enterprise Linux Server (SELS) is not likley to run well on a laptop
it is not meant for a laptop

sound support is not there
graphics support is not there
the mouse touch pad might not work
the built in 3d chip is not well supported , IF it is even supported

and wireless is not well supported
a server dose not need a wireless connection
nor bluetooth

so
first look in yast
under the services to see if "networkMamager" is even installed
"Network" ( ifup/ifdown) handles WIRED connections
"NetworkManager" handles wireless and dsl and vpn

under network
disable "network" and enable "networkManager"

also seeing as this IS " SUSE Enterprise Linux Server service pack 1 "
-- you do know that service pack 3 is the current
you are a few YEARS out of date

you did BUY the required support contract from Novell
have you asked Novell , seeing as you ARE paying them a lot of cash for the required support contract

unless you MUST use the OLD SELS11 sp1
and must use it on a laptop and not a desktop

you would be better off using the current OpenSUSE 12.3
-- one it is FREE

Thats Correct As John said, SLES11 sp1 is now here meant for a laptop, So check YAST and start the Network Manager it is listed there usually.
