UI

Without gui I only know of running in runlevel 1 you can turn on networking etc. in this runlevel. Edit /etc/inittab and change the line "id:3:initdefault:" to "id:1:initdefault:"

In kde u can use "Control Centre -> System Administration -> Login Manager" turn on auto login.

In gnome probably for kde as well "/usr/sbin/gdmsetup".
