how to completely uninstall a program

I used "Add/Remove Programs" and I removed Thunderbird and Firefox. Then I downloaded those programs and installed them. But they had the same settings as before. Am I neglecting something?

under your /home/$user directory, there should be a .mozilla and a .thunderbird folder. Those hold user settings.
