How to close the X-server in Ubuntu 12.04

I need to install my display card driver,but it require to close the x-server firstly, How to close the X-server in Ubuntu 12.04

To stop the display manager you have either to boot into recovery mode or you stop the display manager when it is already running with

Code:

sudo service lightdm stop

May I ask you why you don't install the driver from the repositories, which is the recommended way on Ubuntu?
