how to check version of a program in linux?


Hi,
does any one know how to check the version of a program, in particular geant4, in linux usuing the command lines?

Usually programname --version or programname -v

Either by checking the man page which will give you proper syntax or alternately by using -v or -V flag typically... but it varies program to program there is no standard way.

I'd suggest that --version is most reliable of the given suggestions, since -v or -V are also often used to indicate 'verbose' rather than 'version'
