How to change to root to put file in amsn
I'm hoping someone will answer this question. I installed aMSN and downloaded some new skins and installed it in.tar form, and the instructions say to unpack the zip and move it to the ''skins'' folder. Now when I try and do so, it says ''I don't have permissions'' to do so. I would like to know how I log into root for that folder or move the file as root cause moving it as in ''drag and drop'' doesn't work even as root. Do I do it from konsole or some other way?

Type: su
in a console. Also, if you're root and it won't let you then the permissions may be set wrong. What's the exact error you're getting? |
Access denied
Could not write to /usr/share/amsn/error When I try and copy and paste the file I guess what I'm asking is how I change the file permissions? I firgured out how to move the file with konsole go to directory cd /blah/blah then mv /filename /place where you want to move it. |
to change file permissions (terminal): chmod
there is also a way to do it in the GUI, but--if you do not own the file, you will have to log in as root. Once you get used to it, the terminal is easier. |
ok thanks, so what would be the command with chmod? chmod -c and what an thanks for helping me out.

Ok, now I lost all persmission to the file by typing chmod ugo=rxw amsn. I can't even look at the file, ohhh man I'm about to throw my tower out the window.
