How to change permissions on an external drive in pclinuxos2007

Howdi all im running pclinuxos 2007 and in my opinion its awesome because i am a noob lol, I have a 300 gig external USB drive that i used to use with my windows computer and its formatted as NTFS.So i have plugged this into my computer with pclinux on it and tried to put some stuff from my home folder onto the external drive and i dont have the permissions.

So i logged in as root user and tried to change the permissions on the drive and it just kept saying failed to change permissions or something like that.

Can someone drop me some step by step instructions or something?
