How to change permissions of rc.sysinit in run level 1

Hi,

While playing with my Linux box, I edited rc.sysinit in /etc/rc.d/ folder. But now when I boot into run level 3 or 5, I get complain that system cannot run /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.

I boot into run level 1, and checked its permissions, which is rw-r--r-- . It should be rwxr-xr-x.

I tried to use chmod to change its permissions, but it responded that "Read Only file system"

Now how can I change its persmissions when in run level 1. In run level 3 and 5, machine does not boot.

My box has Fedora Core 2 with kernel 2.6.20.

Any hint, suggestion or solution will be highly appreciated.

Regards

Can you mount the filesystem rw?

mount -orw,remount /dev/whatever

then chmod 755 rc.sysinit. Did you change the owner/group inadvertantly?

Or do you have a (more serious) filesystem problem?

Thanks bakdong for your response.

When I tried to mount, it said already mounted.
I tried to umount it first, but it didn't work.

Finally I used a FC2 installation CD and using its linux rescue mode, fixed the problem.

Glad you got it fixed. :-) I wonder why the 'remount' option didn't work....
